Decks, fences, railings and pergolas cleaned, prepped and stained to protect the wood from sun, rain and snow.

Ontario winters, spring rain and summer sun are hard on wood. A good stain keeps your deck and fence from greying, cracking and splintering, but only if the wood is properly cleaned and dry first. Skipping prep is the most common reason stain peels within a year. We clean, prep and stain every board so the finish soaks in and lasts.

What We Stain

  • Decks and deck stairs
  • Wood fences and gates
  • Railings and spindles
  • Pergolas and gazebos
  • Porches and wood steps

Deck & Fence Staining Prices

Staining is priced by the size of the deck or length of fence, the condition of the wood, how much old stain needs to come off, and the type of stain you choose. Every job starts with a free on-site visit and a fixed-price written quote, so the price we quote is the price you pay. Start with our quote form.

Our Deck & Fence Staining Process

  1. Free estimate. We check the wood, the old finish and any boards that need attention, and help you choose a stain.
  2. Protect the area. Siding, plants, patio stones and furniture are covered or moved.
  3. Clean the wood. A deck cleaner removes dirt, mildew and grey, weathered fibres.
  4. Strip or sand. Loose and failing old stain is removed so the new stain can soak in.
  5. Let it dry. We only stain dry wood, in the right weather.
  6. Apply the stain. Stain goes on evenly, a few boards at a time, to avoid lap marks.
  7. Final walkthrough. We check the finish with you and tell you when the deck is ready to use.

Transparent, Semi-Transparent or Solid Stain?

Transparent stain shows the most wood grain but needs the most frequent recoats. Semi-transparent gives colour with visible grain and suits most decks. Solid stain looks more like paint, gives the most UV protection and is a good choice for older, weathered wood and fences. You can move from transparent to solid later, but not easily the other way. We use quality exterior stains from brands like Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, Cloverdale and Behr. Read our deck and fence staining guide to learn more.

When Is the Best Time to Stain?

Late spring to early fall, on dry days with temperatures of roughly 10°C to 30°C and no rain for about a day after staining. Most decks need re-staining every 2 to 3 years and fences every 3 to 5 years. A simple test: sprinkle water on the wood. If it soaks in instead of beading up, it is time.

Deck & Fence Staining FAQs

How often should a deck be stained?

Most decks need re-staining every 2 to 3 years, and fences every 3 to 5 years. Decks wear faster because they take foot traffic and hold water and snow.

Can you stain a new pressure-treated deck?

New pressure-treated wood is often too wet to stain right away. It usually needs a few months to dry out. The water test tells you when it is ready, and we can check it for you.

Should I paint or stain my deck?

For most decks, stain is the better choice because it soaks into the wood and wears more evenly. Paint forms a film that can peel on walking surfaces.

Do you stain fences on both sides?

Yes, if you have access to both sides. If the other side faces a neighbour, we can stain your side only.

What if some boards are rotten?

We point out soft or rotten boards at the estimate so they can be replaced before staining. Stain will not fix rotten wood.

How soon can we use the deck after staining?

Usually after the stain has dried, often the next day, depending on the product and the weather. We will tell you exactly when.
