Timing matters, especially outside. Paint needs the right temperature and humidity to cure properly, and in Southwestern Ontario that window is limited. Here is how to plan your project.
Exterior painting: late April to late October
Most exterior paints need temperatures of roughly 10°C or warmer during application and while they dry, plus a dry surface and no rain in the forecast. That makes late spring through early fall the main season in Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge, London and Woodstock. Some all-weather paints, like Sherwin-Williams Latitude, can be applied in cooler conditions, which helps extend the season into October.
The best months for exterior work
- Late May to June: mild temperatures and long days
- Late August to September: often the ideal stretch, with warm days, lower humidity and fewer bugs
- July: good, but we avoid painting surfaces in direct midday sun on the hottest days
Exterior schedules fill quickly, so we recommend booking your estimate in early spring for summer work.
Interior painting: any time of year
Interior painting can be done year-round. In fact, fall and winter are great times to repaint inside: schedules are more flexible, and low-odour paints mean you can stay comfortably at home. It is also the perfect time to get ready for holiday guests or a spring home sale. See what is included on our interior painting page.
Painting before selling your home
If you plan to list in spring, paint in late winter. Fresh, neutral walls and ceilings photograph better and help buyers picture themselves in the space.
